Judith’s Journey to Find Music Therapy…
Judith’s discovery of music therapy began when her husband at that time, was scheduled for back surgery. She’d been playing her violin at night to help him sleep. Surprisingly, he woke up without back pain or the need for medication. So she recorded his favorite songs, along with music she liked, to play for him after emergency back surgery.
The nurse came in post-surgery to check his vital signs and administer routine high-blood pressure medication, but discovered he didn’t need it. Noticing the headphones, she asked what he was listening to. Judith told her “me” (somewhat embarrassed as it was not a professional recording sitting on her living room floor playing into a mono-microphone). The nurse couldn’t believe that he didn’t need medication, and noted in his chart that music instead of medication had been used to bring his high blood pressure to normal range within 30 minutes. That hospital experience motivated Judith to expand her focus beyond performance to healing and Music 4 Life® was born.
Judith Pinkerton became the first Board-Certified Music Therapist in the USA to receive the state-issued music therapy license. After spearheading efforts that resulted in the new Nevada law for music therapy licensure, she evolved Music 4 Life® into empowerment programs for people to take control of their own lives. Her Music 4 Life® music therapy practice expanded to working with children and adults experiencing trauma, anxiety, stress-related conditions, anger issues, addiction, depression and loss.
Judith shares with the world how music applied as medicine supports emotional regulation.
